Identifying a Woodchuck

Woodchucks, also known as groundhogs or whistle pigs, are one of the largest members of the squirrel family. Woodchucks are very able climbers and swimmers. As they are normally spotted in fields or along roadsides, many are surprised to see them in their backyard! Read below for information on how to identify a woodchuck in your yard.

Description & Appearance

Woodchucks are short and squat animals. They are awkward runners with claws on their front paws to make them proficient diggers. Other identifiable characteristics include:

  • 16-25 in length
  • Weigh 5-10 pounds
  • Brown coats
  • Eyes and ears near top of the head
  • Furry tail

Habitat

Woodchucks will create dens that are deep, large, and contain dozens of feet of tunnels. They prefer to dig burrows in dry and gravelly earth. Open grasslands, meadows, farm fields, edges of forest clearings, and grassy roadsides are a few favorites!

Woodchucks in Homes

Entry

Woodchucks will stay within 150 feet of their burrows – even during their most active season. Woodchucks do not have a real reason to enter a residential home. However, their feeding habits will lead them into yards and crop fields in search of tasty food.

Damage

Woodchucks do not generally cause harm to humans (unless rabies are involved). They will accumulate damages to properties like farms, orchards, gardens, and lawns. Woodchucks can be responsible for a significant loss of crops, including soy beans, peas, carrots, lettuce, alfalfa, apples, and flowers. Burrowing activities wreak havoc on building foundations, roads, driveways, lawns, and embankments. Due to the large burrows woodchucks create, farm equipment and livestock also face potential harm.
