Identifying a Bat

Description

The most common bats found in homes would include the little brown bat and the big brown bat. Each type of bat shares common characteristics. Bat wings are actually broad webbed hands. They have short legs, sharp claws, large ears, and fur that ranges from light tan or yellowish in color to dark brown and black. Bats make high-pitched squeaks that aid then in navigation through the dark and acts as a communication.

Bats will roost in dark and safe areas during the day. They will use their feet to hang upside down as they sleep. Bats will roost within caves, trees, attics, and chimneys. As dusk approaches bats awaken and fly out of their roosting area in large numbers. Due to their diet of flying insects, bats prefer to roost near ponds, lakes, or pools.

Bat Control

Bat Damage

Bats in attics and bats in chimneys will create damages that can be difficult, and dangerous, to remove. The amount of droppings that one small colony can create will be extensive. Bat guano (droppings) is a health hazard and will make people sick. When bat guano collects in attics it will begin harboring dangerous fungal spores, such as histoplasmosis. Bat urine will stain drywall, soil insulation, and create a musky smell throughout your home.

Histoplasmosis

Histoplasmosis is an infection caused by a fungus commonly found within bat droppings. If histoplasmosis is not taken care of, it may expand from the lungs. This infection throughout the whole body can be fatal.
